Your recruiter is the guy with the lot full of used Toyotas he needs to sell, you are the one walking around with the wad of cash in your hand. But if they're throwing money at you, it's because they have trouble filling the job, not because they're nice guys, so don't let the money affect your decision. But bonuses are taxable, some are paid out slowly over time, and you're going to feel dumb and bitter if at the end of year four your friends are getting out and getting $80k/yr jobs and you're still making $30k/yr for the next two years because that $40k sounded amazing four years ago, and not so much now.īasically, totally ignore bonuses when choosing a job, but pretend a bonus would sway you, and if the government just so happens to throw wads of money at you, roll with it. I know that sounds amazing as a young person. I don't know the current specific bonus situation for Army, but let's say in theory you can sign 4 years for no bonus or 6 years for $40k. But I wouldn't take a job you wanted less, or add an extra two years, even for money like $40k unless doing so actually fits with your life plans. There's a whole lot more but I don't really feel like typing any more.I (and others) say this constantly: a bonus is a "nice to have" for any decision you were pretty much going to make anyway. They may be able to tell you about opportunities that you otherwise wouldn't have access to. Also, try to stay in touch with your buddies from the schoolhouse. A good attitude will take you a long way. No matter where you go though, always keep a good attitude. Unless you count public speaking or copy and paste as a skill. You don't really have any hard or technical skills to speak of. It's fair to say that 35F IS the jack of all trades of the "intel community". If you end up in a run of the mill S2 shop, be prepared for lots of PERSEC, PHYSEC, and OCONUS leave. You may get airborne and go to a group assignment right out of the schoolhouse or you may end up in the eighty deuce not doing jack. (I'm intel so I'm a foreign language expert, obviously) If you haven't found all the sub-reddits regarding this topic, as well as all the other comparisons of various intel jobs within the army specifically, then you're wrong. Do not answer n00b questions on the main boards.
